In today's National Post:

Millenium gift is DeBeers best friend

BHP Plans Own Push

Summary: DB is preparing to launch an advertising campaign
at selling precious gems to mark Jan. 1, 2000.

"We're going to have a big campaign marking the millennium," said
George Burne, managing director of Vancouver-based DeBeers Canada Corp.

(The important and interesting thing is the VANCOUVER based)

BHP is considering a special campaign of buying Canadian stones extracted from the 900 million Ekati proljct. First Ekati diamonds will hit the auction block this Jan. in Antwerp, Belgium.

DB is playing coy with its ad campaign but probably going to promote limited collection millenium stones. Tom Beardmore-Gray is DB's
Canadian manager. DB's ad agency is J. Walter Thompson Co., London,
Eng. DB spends 200,000,000 annually on ads.

(Doesn't make the cost of Ekati look like all that much, does it?)

DB is experimenting with a branding process. London jeweller Boodle and Dunthorne (honest guys, I'm not making these names up) repots trade marked gems are hot.

Another competitor bites the dust.

Ditem finds no diamonds in initial Quebec tests.
Tests on Otish Mountain project in northern Quebec recovers no
commercially interesting diamonds. Tested 7 tons of drill core
from kimb pipes. Going to spend their budget testing other
pipes.
