JP, >>RE: It's amusing that we discriminate between so-called "quality" (eg, DELL) and "hype" (eg, AMZN, YHOO), seeking to justify one stock price over another...<< You actually quoted Alan out of context to support your point of view, and that is really not fair! Now let's consider the 'history' (since you seem to make your decisions based on history). You are going to invest in a 'Box Maker' (since you like to refer to DELL as a box maker). You have a choice of DELL and Gateway. (They seem to be pretty comparable - don't they?) You would choose ---? a) DELL because they have a 'historical performance' record - or b) Gateway because their P/E is lower? How about chip 'makers' Intel and AMD. You would choose ---? a) Intel - because they have been the leading developer in the technology for several years - or b) AMD - because they have been able to produce a chip that competes against Intel. How about software? You would chose MSFT or Oracle, Linux, Lotus - you would choose ----? a)Microsoft - because they are used in some 300 million systems - or b)sombody else - because they compete with MSFT. Now we come to the 'hyped' stocks of AMZN and YHOO. Maybe not hyped! Consider that AMZN 'sells (resells)' books and CD's. Those are products that people want. I have dealt with AMZN and I fins their prices extremely competitive and a very wide selection. That is not to say that in the future AMZN won't have substantial competition in the future. AMZN will have to be very careful in going forward from here. Consider that YHOO has a search engine that is used all over the web. YHOO gains revenue from the advertisers that use YHOO as a vehicle to get their company information in front of the 'maximum' number of people. After all, isn't that what 'advertising' is all about? Sure there are other 'search engines', but where would you spend your advertising dollars? - on the 'net' or a monthly magazine? I could make any number of other comparisons, but of what value? It is really just a 'horse race' with several contestants with many people choosing their 'favorite' for whatever reason. Some do better than others! JMHO, Regards, Ken
