>>> I am virtually certain that the outcome of the trial will not directly affect the value of my MSFT investment.

Actually I think that if the most extreme measure were applied, breaking up the company, both the industry and your stock value would benefit. As with the Baby Bells. I think that's what keeps the price high on Wall Street - under most scenarios the damage to the company will be slight. For one thing, under that scenario the unfunded employee options could probably be made to disappear.

However, if the company were enjoined from certain software practices and proctors-in-place were appointed to supervise and attend meetings in Redmond ongoing, but no other changes applied, I would expect a drop in MSFT growth, and any drop in growth could have investors focusing on issues like unfunded employee stock options again. Then there could be some damage.

So we will see. The investing public has a lot of confidence that MSFT will in some ways win this fight even if they 'lose' it. But the investing public has been wrong before. Personally I would like to see all my friends, and the market in general, keep all their money, of course.
