Keith (or anyone else) on ADSL vs. cable modem...

ADSL for internet access is considered to be the telcos answer to cable modems.

The performance and cost vary considerably throughout N. America and the price can be the same as cable (or higher), and the performance can be better or worse, as there are many variables to be considered. For example, cable bandwidth is shared bandwidth so if you happen to live next door to someone who is constantly downloading files, then they will likely affect your cable performance. In a case like that you would likely do better with ADSL.

Regarding specific data transfer rates, here are some sample values from Telus:

"Download speeds are currently set to connect at up to 2.5 megabits per second. Upload speed can be up to 1.0 megabit per second. Your actual connected speed and transfer rates with vary depending upon your distance to our TELUS wire centre, noise on the line and the internet site that you are downloading from."

This info from: telusplanet.net

Besides the variables listed above, there are also many performance factors relating to the design of the service providers own LAN/WAN and connection speed(s) from their network out.

I urge anyone considering a high speed solution to research the market in your own area - make some calls and ask for typical throughput figures from the providers you are considering. Ask them how their track record has been on service outages in your area. Do a search of the newsgroups for info using DEJANEWS and a few keywords...

Existing customers may have posted articles in your region stating whether they are happy or not.

Lastly I recommend trying a monthly pkg. before signing up for any long terms to make sure you are satisfied with the performance.
