Matsushita Electric Industrial is readying MPEG1 Coder Engine, new software capable of compressing audio and video into the MPEG1 format for video CDs in real time and saving them directly to a PC. Sales begin December 15 with an OEM license price of 1500 yen per copy. The company looks forward to sales of 150,000 units the first year to the PC image processing market. Matsushita's new technology handles the entire compression procedure with software, doing away with expensive encoder hardware. The industry's first real time software encoder adds to its appeal by working with the video CD format. Electric Industrial, 11/12/98 ///
