Mohan I agree 100% re "show me the money" and I like your way with words--"biz rags!" <Bombastic statements by the competition won't cut it, show me the money I say to them.I look at the competitions performance and then I look at this and I am perplexed to say the least at their claims as well the pundits and biz rags of this world.>

>>i wonder how the competition will measure up to this, particularly Compaq

They simply don't measure up to Dell, and serious market followers value them accordingly. The 50 week comparison graph (http://www.techstocks.com/~wsapi/investor/chart?s=cpq+dell&pts=50&span=Weeks) shows dell up 195% versus 5% for cpq.

Compaq was once a King (in Gorilla Game terminology), but they've slipped to Prince due to their inability to modify their Packard-Bell like business model. Now they are headed for Serf class by trying to mimic the dell paradigm based primarily on a lower price (but not a lower cost of ownership). Compaq has not been able to integrate Tandem and DEC, are attacking Intel with the Alpha chip, and are trying to shore up their marketshare with direct sales without killing their retail relationships. IMHO, they've spread themselves too thin.

Long term, the next Dell is still Dell.
