News Technology Headlines Friday November 13 1:14 PM ET Lucent invests in wireless chips By R. Scott Raynovich SAN FRANCISCO (Wired) - Signaling increased interest in the wireless phone market, Lucent Venture Partners, a division of Lucent Technologies, confirmed Friday that it is investing in PrairieComm, a manufacturer of chips and software for the wireless digital voice and data industry. Boston-based Greylock, a well-known private venture capital firm that invests in technology, communications, and health care companies, is collaborating with Lucent in the PrairieComm investment, said Lucent Venture Partners spokesman Jeff Baum. Neither Greylock nor Lucent (NYSE: LU - news) would release the details of the investments. Observers say the company's investment in PrairieComm signals Lucent's intense interest in digital wireless technology. ''Lucent realizes that wireless is big business so they've been making a number of investments and acquisitions in that area,'' said Bob Egan, research director of the wireless division of the Gartner Group. ''They want to be a contender in wireless. The challenge is going to be how to tie all of it together.'' Egan said that Lucent enjoys an advantage over other wireless companies because it is not burdened with the conversion of older analog product lines into digital products. But he believes it may be 2002 before the world sees a predominance of consumer products that are based purely on digital and data-driven wireless networks rather than on analog voice technology. Lucent Venture Partners officials said that investments made by the Venture Partners arm of Lucent are used to complement technology that the company is developing on its own. ''We're identifying technology in the early stages of development that could fill gaps in our own technology,'' said Lucent's Baum. ''This is the general philosophy, and it would be the philosophy behind the PrairieComm investment.'' PrairieComm, based in Arlington Heights, Illinois, also has business partnerships with Qualcomm and Motorola's Wireless Infrastructure Semiconductor Division.
