Agreed that the scalability (or inability) will limit Plato's competition against Essbase. The article below also supports the belief that SQL7 won't be a huge demand driver for Plato in Fortune 500 cos.

Survey Reveals SQL Server 7.0 Not a Big Hit With Fortune 500

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In a recent survey of Fortune 500 IT executives conducted by World Research, 72% expressed reservations about deploying SQL Server 7.0 from Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - news). Their concerns included the fact that SQL Server 7.0 is limited to the proprietary Windows operating system and that this new version is a complete rewrite and therefore unproven. Additionally, respondents also expressed concern that SQL Server 7.0 still lacks features needed to run their businesses. When asked to describe their company plans for SQL Server 7.0 over the next 2 years, 74 percent of the respondents stated that their respective organizations have no plans or only limited plans for deployment.

When asked to describe SQL Server 7.0, almost half of these database decision-makers categorized the product as ''an incremental improvement'' or ''no improvement over SQL Server 6.5,'' and ''substantially,'' or ''way behind'' industry leaders like Oracle {Nasdaq: ORCL). In contrast, 72 percent of the respondents described Oracle as the database industry and technology leader or the database vendor who is driving down the cost and complexity of databases.

The most common area of concern for respondents revealed by the survey was Microsoft's strategy of confining SQL Server to a single operating system. ''These results indicate that Fortune 500 IT executives are clearly concerned about platform limitations,'' said Michael Bach, President of World Research.

These findings were revealed in a telephone survey commissioned by Oracle Corp. [Nasdaq:ORCL - news] and conducted by World Research Inc. of San Jose, CA, a leading provider of proprietary research for high-tech companies and publications. The survey, conducted in October 1998, includes a random sample of 100 high- ranking IT executives with database purchasing authority or influence in Fortune 500 companies.
