3Com Links PalmPilots To Mobile Phones

3Com unveiled today an update to its Palm Computing platform that will
allow infrared connections to mobile phones, giving PalmPilot users
wireless data-access capabilities.

The company released the Enhanced IR update, downloadable software
that lets PalmPilot users beam data from their machines to Ericsson's
infrared-capable mobile phones. The Ericsson phones can then transmit
that information, such as E-mail, addresses, and application data across a
GSM cellular network.

3Com says the links to mobile phones tap the potential of the portable
computing devices, helping users to send and receive data without needing
an extra modem or having to use a wire line.

The Enhanced IR update software, which adds the IrComm infrared
communications protocol to the Palm handheld device, is free. 3Com did
not disclose whether it would support other brands of telephones in future
renditions.
