Someone has to build and sell commodity products - the problem is with classically-defined commoditized products is that they were sold through channels and thus marginalized the manufacturer's revenue.

Someone who is good at executing the process of making them, and who knows how to do that can do better than someone who is not will win business. Someone with efficiencies of scale. Someone who has other lines of business that contribute to profitability or that can leverage the resources.

Not a too-complex model at work here. Then again, I wouldn't hold it exclusively, either.
