Humble thanks, dwight, I was the curious one.

The last link was especially helpful to a dummy like me, and here is the part that helps to explain why the market got all excited about Microvision's news today:

Researchers have been attempting to develop blue light emitting devices for decades. Now, recent developments have made that goal within reach. Blue light emitting diodes and laser diodes should bring about radical changes in the electronics industry. These devices will bring consumers cheaper products that consume power more efficiently. In the way that transistors made vacuum tubes obsolete, solid state light sources may replace light bulbs. As researchers continue to make developments at a rapid pace, blue light emitting devices may brighten our future soon.
