Christine,
<< When she was little I was deeply influenced by the school of
thought that immersion parenting was the best for the child, and that so much
separateness would traumatize her and cause her to be anxious and insecure later. I am
rethinking all that now!>>

My daughter is 7 now. I believe very firmly that the parents give the child the ideas of what they are worth that they carry through their whole lives when they are young. Kids are very perceptive and don't listen to words but judge by actions. The "immersion" that you talk about is probably what I am doing. I don't think that a lot of isolation is teaching anything positive when they are young. My daughter just complains that I am not doing enough with her. Being on this computer is an isolating activity and I am neglecting her (as she often reminds me). Right now she is watching a movie. I suppose that you can give your child too much attention but I can't. I work and do other things. I always feel that I am cheating her of the time she needs with me whenever I do anything on my own.

>What's too bad is that parents cannot read their children's minds, and explain
stuff like that, so that the kids don't grow up feeling bad and out of sorts and deprived. <

Yeah. (long silence) I wonder what traps I'll never have seen myself step into with the Helenator and/or Projected Sibling.

All I can hope is that we as parents, Spouse and I, will foster the sort of atmosphere of trust and "talk-about-it"ness that the major stuff, the stuff we all still remember, will be discharged before it gets to scab over.
