They don't. Seems definite enough. Don't argue w/ us, go straighten out Chevron. A year ago, I *knew* I could fix any corp, I'd get a bunch of hairy, sweaty, code-heads and we'd hammer on the code until it squealed "uncle". It wouldn't be cheap but I know serious talent, pay 20% over market and get the best. I know magicians who can flow S/390 object code from their fingertips. Now, 413 days to go... forget it. Don't call me. I don't need the aggravation. > >> tell us what *you* are doing to be > > part of the solution... << > > I work for Action 2000, the UK government's Y2K initiative. How about you? I work for the highest bidder and right now, the highest bidder is paying me to sit on a beach in Waikiki and think grand thoughts. The minute a Y2K job comes along that pays more, I'll take it. Until then, it's humu-humu-nuku-nuku-apu-a-a, Ua-mau-ke-ea-o-ka-aina-i-ka-pono, and I'll have seconds on the chicken luau, please. Flip on the 2 meters and hit the Diamond Head repeater... 28/88 is it? Whoa, malasadas, pan duce w/ guava jelly, teriyaki pork cutlet and macaroni salad. > Part of the origin of this entire thread concerned a report that IT people > are deserting the ship before it starts sinking. Nobody's thick enough to > want people to want 24/7. All I ask is for people to work. Then *pay* them to do so. There's lots of programmers who would be happy to crank Y2K code. I've received email from code-heads who say they'll discount their rate for a Y2K job, give up 5, 10 bucks an hour to ensure a utility or essential service makes it. I'd expect the firm to say, no, we pay top dollar because we are serious about getting the job done. Until you are in a position to pay 20% over market, forget it. It's just talk. There's a big reality disconnect going on. The work hasn't been done. Don't blame the programmers. It's silly to even talk about this. If they want to bail, let em; my pal, the Baron, occasionally works from DragonRanch. He can connect to the DC regional servers with a V.90 toll free call. You want to do something constructive... wack the CEO's upside the head and get them serious about this. cory hamasaki 413 Days, 9,918 Hours.
