Dell Will Use Adaptec Storage Products in Next Line of Servers

Milpitas, California, Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Adaptec Inc., which makes equipment used to store computer data, and No. 3 computer maker Dell Computer Corp. said Dell will use Adaptec products in its newest line of computer servers.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell will include Adaptec's so- called RAID adapter cards in the newest version of Dell's PowerEdge servers, expected to ship in December, said Adaptec spokesman Bruce Frymire.

The cards allow servers linked in a network to access data stored in other parts of the network at high speeds. Milpitas, California-based Adaptec, which saw sales of its products used in PCs fall amid competition from rivals with newer technologies, has shifted its focus to making products for servers.

Adaptec last month reported profit before a charge fell to $143,000, or break even on a per-share basis, from net income of $62.7 million, or 52 cents, in the year-earlier period. The company was expected to lose 2 cents a share, the average estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call Corp.

Shares of Adaptec fell 1/4 to 15 3/4.
