<<iMac and am using Outlook Express (also updated to Version OS 8.5) as my e-mail. I cannot spell check>>

Do you have MS Office installed?

I believe Outlook derives it's spelling dictionary from MS Office.

In addition to checking the spelling options, you also have to "browse" your hard drive and set the path to the dictionary. At least that is how it is done on Windows.

The Mac version should automatically find the path, so I suspect you do not have an MS dictionary file on the local HD?
