I would wait until the orders are actually given to turn the planes back to the states, before claiming Sadam was the winner (though he may be the winner even if we bomb him). Clinton isn't brilliant, but he's not going to be played this way --- wait and see.

Haim,

Tippet is right. This isn't over yet.

If you read the fine print of Hussein's response to the UN, it states that inspectors can return to their "normal" duties.

Given that what was "normal" before this little crisis was constant interference and obstruction with inspection efforts, a return to the prior status quo will likely not suffice for Clinton.

What we have now is an interesting game of political chess and brinksmanship. It will interesting to see if Clinton has the cajones to force Saddam to fully comply.

As for those 3 nations you mentioned being "friends" of the muslim world, I would suggest you acquaint yourself with the phrase:

"Nations don't have friends. They have interests".

Also, please note that Iraq's Arab neighbors are quite mute in supporting Hussein or tempering US coercion against him.

The only reason that Russia and China are interested in the M-E is as a foil to US political hegemony and as a means to distract us. They also use it as political leverage to gain concessions for their special interests vis-a-vis the US.

As for France... Billy Crystal said it best back in the '80's when performing for a Russian audience.

"The Russians are no longer our enemies.....

It's the French."

Btw, I guess the French were friends of the S. Vietnamese as well??

I continue to watch this play unfold with great interest.

Regards,

Ron
