Dog,

Re: The attempt to exclude DELL from using the I/O bus.

At the heart of your argument is the premise that DELL will somehow be prevented from using the bus called PCI-X. How then is Intel going to make support chips for this proposed I/O standard and not deliver chips to DELL? I doubt seriously that Intel will surrender its autonomy and control of its I/O bus to IBM, HWP, and CPQ with the intent to exclude DELL.

I have served on a cross industry standards committee before and I find this notion ludicrous. CPQ , IBM and HWP will end up with their own version of JAVA. Sounds like another Sun deal.

Now if you think that HWP, CPQ and IBM are going to write their own private standard, that also seems to be goofy. This effort to foist an exclusive standard on the industry sounds conspiratorial to me.

From the technical viewpoint designing and testing a 64 bit I/O bus like PCI-X is hardly rocket science and there is no intrinsic conceptual or practical problems of real significance. However, this is a design process that must be followed to obtain good results. This process and the tools are available to all the companies.

Ultimately, the only advantage that I see from excluding DELL would be getting some jump on the an assured supply of I/O chips. This is a time to market issue. This is important. But if DELL has access to the information that Intel must have then DELL can commission its own chip design to offset any potential advantage that CPQ might have.

What is really going on her is an attempt to rough DELL up and get them to overreact to their detriment. CPQ needs to ruffle Micheal's feathers and get him angry so that he will react badly. The best thing that DELL can do is stay focused and and beat these guys and their dirty tricks in the marketplace.

Just my opinion....

Jim Kelley
