Warning: NT SP4 / Partition Magic dos mode incompatibility

forum.powerquest.com:80/mb/user/message.html?message=11237

"Since the release of Service Pack 4 for Windows NT, we have seen numerous instances where any of our products that run in DOS-mode report errors 1511 and 1627. SP4 makes numerous changes to the NTFS file system which weren't anticipated until the release of NT 5.0. The descriptions of the errors are reflective of the changes being made. Error 1511 is "Bad restart record format", while error 1627 is "Upcase table incorrect". Our programs anticipate that this information will conform to NT 4.0 specifications. When SP4 is applied, the restart record format and upcase table are changed, which then forces our programs to generate an error. Any of our programs that run in MS-DOS mode will report this error. In the case of PartitionMagic 4.0, running the program under NT will take care of the error. In the meantime, we are working towards a solution for the issue and hope to have a fix available for it soon. Once it becomes available, a follow-up posting to this message will be made. PQ Support"

Reason number next I won't sweat not having SP4 on yet. :)

>> add a second 128 meg mem stick
for 256 total, and was pleasently surprised to find a noticable difference
under NT.

As I believe I said at the time, given what you reported your usage
was, you wouldn't notice a difference.

BUT if you get the memory, your usage will change to use
what you've got. This is good. You have capabilities
you didn't have before. The progress of technology <gg>.

Dave, i'm a regular reader of this thread(thanks to all who provide excellent input) and your last post indirectly addressed a problem that i have been unable to resolve. I'm using NT 4.0 sp3 on a 166mmx with 96 meg sdram and NS 4.5 as a browser. when accessing rt quotes via stockwatch NS "freezes" if I open more than two screens of realtime quotes as well as several non java screens. I have installed the Java "patch" available for NT. I would like to be able to run up to 4 quote screens if possibl. Any thoughts you could share to shed some light on this problem would be most appreciated. thanks in advance mike
