>>Magnetic storage will be around for along time. Look at digital camcorders, they STILL use tape. <<

A 60 minute DV-Cam tape holds several Gigs worth of data. I'm guessing 20 Gigs. I'll try and find out a more accurate numnber. Anyway, it is reliable because it is a magnetic media in which the read/write head is ALREADY IN CONTACT WITH THE TAPE. Therefore, no risk of a head crash is there when jostling around the camera. A disc drive-based camera will be under great risk of a head crash at any time. If/when this happens, the ENTIRE CAMERA would have to be sent in for repair.

But using optical storage utilizes a technology in which there is no risk of a head crash at all. The future may indeed go to optical if/when the price compared to tape becomes acceptable.

PS. I just checked DV specs

dvcentral.org

and the DV Camcorder's data rate is "3.7MB/sec plus overhead."

How much overhead? I don't know, but this translates to over 13.3 Gigabytes of data (not including "overhead") per 60 minutes of DV tape. Certainly too much for Zip or Jaz.
