The WSJ had some interesting numbers. I'd like to know
what you think.

"A...prodictive programmer can write 30000 lines of
code per year... " This is about 15 lines per hour. If
a programmer makes $100000 per year [probably low when
all costs are included ] this comes to $3/line- or more
realistically $ 3 to 5/line.

Is this realistic? Is it for debugged code, ready for
publication?

NT5.0 has over 40 mm lines of code. MSFT has 4000
programmers working on it.

How do you integrate the work of the programmers. One
integrator for each 4 or 5 programmers?

Note that NT 5.0 cost $120 to 200 mm. This probably
doesn't include marketing costs, the bean counters,
the law dept, management overhead or the cost of
options.

$200 mm is not much when you consider their sales. If
the same cost were applicable to W98, the cost would be
only a couple of dollars a copy. As a guess how about
$10 per.

I invite you to correct any or all of the above numbers.

Stick to programming- you will never make it as a poet.
