Your understanding is incorrect. CD-RW's capacity is 650MB. This does not diminish with re-writes. CD-RW's are often rated for 1000 write cycles. This is at least as good as Zip or any other magnetic disc.

If you want to use a CD-RW as a big giant floppy (drag and drop at will), you can use Packet Writing software like DirectCD, however this diminishes the useful capacity to about 500MB per CD-RW disc. But you can write over and over and over again.

CD-RW is great. I have 2 CD-RW drives. And where I work the total is 4 CD-RW's.
