In fact WD-40 was the result of a DOD study re those Atlas Misseles and the effort to make them water proof. Great stuff for freeing up stuck exhaust bolts. "I said bring me a wrench, not a wench."

I just discovered this thread. As a lifelong car nut, I'm glad to find a meeting place for those of us so afflicted.

Regarding WD40 for cleaning/preserving firearms. Gun nuts (I'm also one of those) recommend caution using WD40 on firearms,especially if they are stored loaded . WD40 is such an effective penetrant that it is said to contaminate ammunition and render it unreliable if left in contact very long.
