Sanjay,

Yes, I've read the 5 fairness principles and have yet to read a proper technical defense from the UTRA/W-CDMA people. Suspect they don't have one. I've heard that they believe the use of GPS is too expensive and would prohibit locations for basestations where GPS satellites could not be seen(tunnels, subways etc). On the other hand, some of these same companies are investing in GPS technologies. Why? Because they know position location is a growing service/business that people will increasingly want...we're seeing it used in cars and personal handheld devices more than ever before. They intend to incorporate it, into their phones. So out one side of their mouths they say it's use is too expensive for basestations but out the other side they say GPS on a chip is here and we can put it in the phone quite cheaply!! How ironic!

Asynchronous vs synchronous. Sanjay, I suspect you realize a lot could be said about this. The Chinese analysis probably reflects some of this performance difference. Again, in my opinion, it really comes down to subs/buck. I agree with you that to get performance from asynchronous operation will require more hardware/cost. Again the cost of being different??

Clearly there is a lot of FUD going around about the merits of the proposals from the various camps. Just like there always has been. To sort it out I again invite interested readers to check out the CDMA-2000 and the UTRA/W-CDMA proposals at the ITU website.

I've heard the arguments that W-CDMA was designed with GSM in mind and is most efficient etc etc. I've heard that IS-95 is 2G technology and that W-CDMA represents a real advance to 3G etc etc. I've also heard that the GSM juggernaut will continue to roll over CDMA in mobile. Look real close folks....there is a very high stakes poker game going on. Some of the players have really bad hands....they are bluffing for all they can. We really live in interesting times.
