Pasted below is a short lay article about global warming and the international response. The author's not-so-surprising conclusions: 1) evidence to support the global warming hypothesis is becoming less equivocal; and 2) the Kyoto treaty is a dead letter.

"Until last summer, satellite data seemed to contradict the whole idea of global warming. Although thermometers at ground level were showing a warming trend, the measurements taken by remote sensing devices on weather satellites showed the opposite. Then two California scientists showed that the satellite data were not adjusted for changes in the altitude of the satellites: The warming trend was back in favor."

"On the other hand, the assertion that human emissions of carbon dioxide are responsible for global warming became somewhat less persuasive recently when researchers showed that the growth of trees in North America has absorbed all such human emissions of carbon during the past century. The chance that global warming is caused by human activity may have decreased."
