The duals are a lot easier on the turf, that's a big reason they are used on tractors, less soil compaction. Originally they were looking for more traction but a tractor should have 8 to 10% tire slip to save the drive train. Most are running duals on the front also.

On a truck the duals help carry the load with a 5th wheeler or gooseneck trailer. Cuts down on the sway too.

Shame you had such a bad experience. Those goosenecks are really handy when you have a long rig in a tight spot.

I pull a 20 foot bass boat and I will not buy a trailer without surge brakes. First boat trailer with brakes and an idiot pulls onto I74 while I'm being passed, made me a believer as I was sure I'd jackknife into the ditch. Stopped straight and in time.
