Neil,

<<<Contender or Pretender [or what exactly is the space between a managed Hub and a Switched Fabric ? ] >>>

It is a possible contender IMO. One of the primary function of a FC hub is to take out failed loop device(s) and close the loop with the rest of the functional devices continue working. An 8 port FC/AL switch theoretically can connect 8 arbitrated loops together and each arbitrated loop can have up to 127 devices. Without a hub to manage the loop devices, the loop will become non-functional if one of the 127 devices within the same loop failed. What Gadzoox is trying to provide is a dual-function port which fulfill the function of a hub and a switch. Sounds nice, doesn't it. Except when I need to connect 2,000(just a number off the top of my head) or more, I'm going to need 2,000 of these ports. Will they scale well? It will be up to the integrators to evaluate. The comparison will be a design with these dual-function port and FC/AL switch with hubs managing loop devices. My current thinking is that Gadzoox is targeting small enterprise FC SANs. The performance of this new switch(125 switch cascaded together to provide 2000 ports) will be one of the key factors besides price per port.
