Jim -
I think that storage area network implementations at the systems level will solve many of the problems of disk-based saturation, but that requires some major architectural work at the OS and server design level to develop data paths that route and pool data independent of hardware hierarchies. That won't happen overnight. NIC traffic is a harder problem but data-dependent routing and network dependent decomposition can reduce the amount of that traffic that actually has to go into a given server, and VI concepts can cut the kernel time by a factor of 10. All of these things take a lot of cooperation.

I think it is unfortunate that 'political' factors are getting in the way of the serious work that it will take to get to the next generation, but that's the way it has been ever since I got into the business. The longer such concerns keep the real directions from coming into focus, the more the 'patchwork' solutions get traction and make progress more difficult.
