Stocks To Watch: Monday the 16th Iomega (IOM:NASDAQ)desto.stanford.edu >>IOM. Removable storage maker Iomega Corp. plans to announce the successor to its well-known Zip drive Monday at Comdex. The new 250MB drive and disks will extend the company's Zip product line, while being compatible with Iomega's current 100MB disks. "We made Zip solutions available for every type of computer and now we're delivering the next-generation drive," said Edward D. Briscoe, president of Iomega's personal storage division, in a statement. Surprisingly, the company had the 250MB Zip product hanging in the wings for some time, said Jim Porter, president of disk-drive market watcher Disk/Trend Inc. Iomega (NYSE:IOM) only decided to announce its products after rival Sony Corp. announced its 200MB Zip killer. Sony's new 200MB floppy drive coming "Sony -- with its 200MB floppy drive -- was the biggest threat to Iomega," said Porter, who added that Sony is expected to ship its high-capacity floppy by the end of the month. Iomega waited about six months, until the Sony announcement was imminent, before unveiling its plans, said Porter. "Iomega didn't need to announce until the other guy showed up," he said. The announcement could go a long way toward banishing the shadow of the "Click of Death" -- a production problem that has plagued some of Iomega's original Zip drives. Porter estimates that high-capacity floppy drive shipments will total 4.7 million in 1998, jumping to almost 29 million in 2001, while 1.44MB floppy drives shipments stall out at a little more than 100 million units. The 250MB Zip drive will ship before the end of the year, said the source, at a price of $199 for the drive and $100 for a six-pack of disks.<< Wierd - first it says IOM is a NASDAQ stock, then it says NYSE.
