Tip, The distributors are just as stuffed as they were early last SPring. To be fair, they are heading into Xmas, the strongest part of the year, so the inventory situation is probably not quite as dangerous as it was then.

I have to wonder if Compaq can juggle this thing. The first discordand note I heard when the Teutonic Tout made his announcement was that "Prices are as low as our competitors' and they cannot match our service." Sorry, Pfeiff, but when you are the new kid on the block, your prices have to be lower, no matter what your name. This reeks of Apple at the zenith of its self-delusion.

Also, what guarantees distributor loyalty? If you don't cut the distributors' price levels, you don't sell with your new direct model. If you do, they will push HP or IBM or Toshiba boxes where they have an exclusive. Yes, Compaq is using different product names on the direct sales boxes, but a box is a box.
