more good info.
November 6, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the
world's largest maker of memory chips, said Nov. 4 that it developed a
high-speed 144Mb Rambus DRAM chip and a 144MB Rambus DRAM
module.
"Our new Rambus chip functions 15 times faster than normal DRAM chips
and six times faster than synchronous DRAM chips," a Samsung official
said. He added that the prototype memory chip to be used in midsize and
large computers is twice as fast as a 72Mb chip that Samsung released in
July.

"Monthly production will reach 100,000 units starting next year and
increase to 1 million chips a month by the second half of 1999," the
Samsung official said.

With the advent of the Rambus DRAM module, global PC makers are
expected to replace their existing synchronous DRAM modules with
Samsung's new module, which employs a 0.23 micron design rule and is
capable of handling data equivalent to 128,000 newspaper pages a
second.

"With our new chip and module, we hope to continue to lead the
next-generation memory chip market," the Samsung official said.

The global market for 144Mb Rambus DRAMs is estimated at US$2.6
billion in 1999, and it's projected to reach US$13.5 billion in 2000.
