<<Meanwhile, U.S. discount brokerages are scooping up business illegally by offering security services to Canadian residents without a license, the Investment Dealers Association of Canada's Gregory Clarke said. There isn't much chance they will be stopped, he added. Canadian authorities would need the help of U.S. authorities to prosecute a U.S. discount broker offering services to Canadians, and authorities have bigger issues to deal with these days, Clarke added.>>

The above excerpt from the Scott Adams article was most interesting. Sounds like the 'authorities' are ignoring the issue right now and Canadians can use American brokers after all. It will be interesting to see what happens as more Canadians find out about this and move their business south of the border. Maybe we'll finally see some pressure applied to Canadian commissions. Is the $10 trade in Canada really a fantasy?

It would also be interesting to find out if any Canadian brokers are opening accounts 'illegally' for Americans.

On the topic of Canadians having accounts with US brokers does anyone know of a US Internet broker who will allow settlement of Canadian trades in Canadian dollars. Of the few that I have found trading Canadian stocks no one will settle in Canadian dollars. Currency conversions can cost anywhere from 3-6%/trade.
