$400 million you say...hum. Let's see now, Cisco Systems acquired NetSpeed Inc. based on Cisco's share price $61.22, the stock exchanged would have had a value of approximately $236 million. NetSpeed's product suite adds customer premise equipment, central office products and broadband remote access to Cisco's DSL product portfolio.

Then, Texas Instruments Inc. acquired Amati Communications Corp. for $20 a share, or $395 million, outbidding Westell Technologies Inc., which had already structured a deal to buy Amati. To break that agreement, Amati must pay Westell a $14.8 million fee. At the time when asked by the WSJ why they were buying Amati, the reply was... "We believe this will be a very large and fast-growing market," said George Barber, vice president for TI's semiconductor group.

Cabletron Systems will acquire FlowPoint Corporation and Ariel Corporation 's Communications Systems Group as part of a strategic initiative to address the DSL market. FlowPoint for US$25 million in cash or stock. Ariel's Communications Systems Group, for US$33.5 million in cash.

Bell Atlantic to acquire GTE...Both carriers have announced ADSL deployment plans and believe that one third of local lines in their territories will be conditioned for the service by the end of 1999. Apotential customer of LU, ADI & AWRE.

AT&T to acquire TCI to bypass LOCAL LOOP...TCI.NET also selected 3Com, Thomson Consumer Electronics and General Instrument Corporation to supply residential cable modems...does Lucent want the Local Loop bypassed?
