To Fang Li.

I will give these ? a shot. Maybe this VC will post his angle on these good questions too. I'd like to see that.

1. Massive amounts of generated code issues and installed base create problems for Macromedia to just jump to a new platform base (In this case, completely based on QuickTime) It probably wouldn't be that easy for Macromedia to just go to QuickTime, but the Falsh player could be embeded in the QuickTime media layer. But that does not solve there main peoblem. Ease of use and no scriptin architecture to do cool things.

2. If Macromedia wanted to do what THW was doing, they should just buy THW. A complete rewrite of Falsh would have to take place. And Macromedia has so much invested into Flash and Shockwave to officially back QuickTime, other than the QT media layer connection mentioed earlier. Macromedia will probably have Flash playable in QT 3.x or 4.0 if they are smart.

3. My understanding is that Apple is really going to push QuickTime 3.5 or 4.0 and I think Macromedia realized that the video game was a tough one to be in. Sell it off, make a sweetheart deal with Apple and make sure that Flash plays in the Quicktime media layer. This is what I heard the deal consisted of. Macromedia needs to protect its investment in Shockwave/Flash and if Apples' QT 3.x or 4.0 takes off as everyone thinks it will, then Macromedia better be in a strong, we can';tr lose position.

Having Flash play back within QuickTime 3.5 or 4.0 media layer protects that investment and guarantees a larger installed base.

Seems as though Macromedia didn't win "Best of Show MacWorld with Director or Flash but Totally Hip won again.

"Best of Show, MacWorld New York, July 8, 1998 for WebPainter 3 beating out Fireworks and Adobe Imageready.

"Best of Show, ExpoMac Mexico City, August 29, 1998 for WebPainter 3 beating out MACROMEDIA Fireworks and Adobe Imageready.

And now "Best of Show, MacWorld San Francisco, Jan 6, 1999 for LiveStage beating out MACROMEDIA Director 7 which got a mention as a runner up and Flash 3 never got mentioned at all.

The little CDN diamond in the rough comes through again. THW:ASE
