Understood, John, and your points are well taken, as always.

Of course, I could be all wet here, but here's something to think about. The question to ask, and this could affect the legitimacy of your hypothesis, is this:

Does the academic-research community have the same level of motivation as an unleashed and recently deregulated commercial community? If the commercial sector is more highly motivated to come out with innovations, then the whole proposition could backfire, with the universities lagging on the time line... or in relevance, if these two communities should take divergent paths.

I know this sounds purely argumentative for argument's sake, but I think that the momentum is on the side of the startup companies with huge capitalizations, and the labs within the newer carriers to blaze new trails, in front of, at least, those of some rather bureaucratically encumbered learning institutions I've been privileged to deal with at times.
