I believe direct will never be more than 30% or so of CPQ's business and not the important 30%, that is a defensive move. I don't think CPQ is a good long-term short at this time - in fact I can't see any point in the last 5 years where it would have been a logical short candidate for more than a day trade. Dell of course is never a good long-term short.

A lot of folks (me included) got sucked in by CPQ management in late '97 and early '98. I should have paid more attention to Jim Kelley back then, he had been advising of the inventory problem since summer of '97.

Still, I don't base my investment decisions solely or even primarily on how much I like the management. I base it on how I think the companies will perform.
