Harvey the Wallbanger (there's a cocktail called that, I swear I don't know how it popped into my head just now),

>The point of my post was not the size of the banana or the

>or how much charity the Europeans owe their former colonies.

>the EU has whatever interest in biasing its banana imports )
>the EU will go with self interest and their parochial needs
>rather that furthering what would be fair and equitable world
>trade

You are wrong in this "self interest" assumption. The fact that Europeans are importing more expensive bananas of lesser quality in order to support those less fortunate is pretty much complete opposite of "self interest".

Why development aid is given in this and other forms is not because we owe to somebody, but because there is a human responsibility to help. This is officially recognized for example in the German foreign aid policy, which is the most concise document on the topic I have seen.

As it happens I'm expert on development aid and we could discuss this at length if you want (you've got to ask yourself one question: do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?)

Disclaimer: nice guy as you are, Wallbanger, I'm going to reveal that the last line in the brackets is a joke.
