Lucent Technologies' Digital Modem Chip Set Selected for New Series of Compaq Presario PCs

ALLENTOWN, Pa., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group today announced that Compaq Computer Corp. has selected Lucent's digital subscriber line (DSL) modem chip set for use in Compaq's new Presario Internet personal computers (PCs).

Beginning this week, Compaq will sell its Presario 5100c Series Internet PCs equipped with Compaq's new 1.5Mb Max Digital modem that contains Lucent's WildWire(TM) DSP1690 chip set. Compaq's modem and Lucent's chip set will also be made available this week for use in Compaq's Presario 5600 Series PCs.

Compaq's DSL-equipped PCs will be available via the company's "Built For You" custom configuration stations at retail locations nationwide or on Compaq's on-line store at compaq.com.

"Today, Compaq announced the world's first broadband-ready Internet PCs with integrated Digital Subscriber Line modems, providing Internet connections up to 25 times faster than current 56K** modems," said Alex Gruzen, director of Internet services with Compaq's Consumer Group. "The Compaq 1.5Mb Max Digital modem -- developed in close cooperation with Lucent Technologies and Aware -- enabled Compaq to be the first to deliver a highly cost-effective digital communications solution that will deliver a superior Internet experience and take consumers into the future."

"Compaq is showing once again its leadership in the PC market by rolling out 1.5 megabit per second Digital Subscriber Line technology for consumers," said Craig Garen, general manager of modem integrated circuits with Lucent's Microelectronics Group. "We are delighted to continue our longstanding modem chip set relationship with Compaq by introducing another ground-breaking product."

Lucent has been Compaq's largest provider of modem chips since Compaq began buying the technology in 1991. Earlier this year, Lucent won a supplier award from Compaq for Lucent's outstanding ratings in providing modem chips for Compaq's PCs.

Lucent's DSP1690 chip set supports both ADSL and V.90 (56-kbps) analog connections. This means that a PC with a modem containing the DSP1690 chip set will be able to transmit data over any phone connection, even in areas where DSL service is not yet offered.

Lucent plans to make its chip set compliant with the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) recommended standard for 1.5 mbps technology, called G.992.2 (or G.Lite). Aware, Inc., is providing ITU G.992.2-compliant technology and software for Lucent's DSP1690. "Through our work with Lucent, we have been able to provide a flexible Digital Subscriber Line solution to the PC industry," said Michael A. Tzannes, president and chief executive officer of Aware.

Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic components. Bell Labs is the research and development arm for the company. For more information on Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., USA, visit its web site at lucent.com.

Lucent's Microelectronics Group designs and manufactures integrated circuits and optoelectronic components for the computer and communications industries. Lucent ranks first in the world in sales of modem chips integrated by PC manufacturers***. Aware, Inc. designs, develops, licenses and markets DSL technology that enables high-speed Internet access over existing telephone networks. The company licenses its intellectual property and software to semiconductor manufacturers and equipment manufactures who sell products incorporating Aware technology. Aware also markets to systems companies to encourage them to design its technology into their products, and to service providers to encourage them to deploy new broadband services based on its technology. More information about Aware can be found at aware.com.

* While WildWire chips are capable of transferring data at 1.5 Mbps,

users' individual line conditions can affect the transfer rate.

** 56 kbps technology refers to server download speeds only and requires

compatible modems at server sites. Other conditions may limit modem

speed.
