Nortel Networks Announces SS7-IP Interworking Initiative

PR Newswire - November 16, 1998 11:15

IPS7 Open Signaling Architecture enables seamless SS7-IP convergence

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE:
NTL), a premier developer of signaling solutions for advanced network applications, today announced
an initiative to develop a standardized signaling protocol and open network architecture to simplify
interworking between Signaling System 7 (SS7) networks and multi-media Internet Protocol (IP)
networks.

Code-named IPS7, this new initiative will encompass all SS7 and IP signaling variants within a single,
standardized open architecture. With IPS7, carriers can assemble voice-over-IP (VoIP) networks
with the understanding that the capabilities of the SS7 intelligent network will be supported. As such,
IPS7 seamlessly integrates the richness of the IP packet-oriented network with the reliability and
intelligence inherent in the SS7-based PSTN circuit-switched world.

The implementation of an industry accepted, open standard for SS7-IP interoperability is designed to
enable a new world of global access, while retaining the reliability and wealth of services delivered by
the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

As a first step toward multi-vendor standards development, Nortel Networks submitted a general
architecture definition to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an international
standards-making body. SSG plans to freely share the concepts of the IPS7 open architecture with the
industry through the IETF and other related standards bodies such as the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Nortel Networks has been a world leader in signaling technology since the inception of SS7 in the
1980s. As one of the first developers of SS7 software and with more than 400 signal transfer point
(STP) nodes deployed worldwide, Nortel Networks is recognized as a leading developer of network
solutions and the center of excellence for the design and interoperability of high-performance signaling
networks.

Clarent Corporation Develops Strong Presence in Europe; Clarent's Latest Strategic Appointments Strengthen Its Position as the VoIP Leader in Europe

November 19, 1998

BRUSSELS--(BUSINESS WIRE)Clarent(tm) Corporation, the premier provider of carrier-grade, phone-to-phone IP telephony solutions worldwide, has announced plans to strengthen its position in Europe.

Clarent's decision to concentrate on building its local European presence is backed by the recent appointment of Chris Wyles, who came on board last week as Vice President, Clarent Europe and Managing Director of European, Middle East and African Operations. Wyles joined Clarent from a similar position at Glenayre Electronics, Inc, global provider of voice mail and prepaid telecom services. Wyles' initial role at Clarent will be to expand Clarent's local sales and support activities. "Clarent's strategy for Europe will be to expand the company's current sales successes to additional PTTs, traditional and new carriers, and long distance alliance companies. Our goal will be to work closely within the different regions in Europe to deploy technology that our customers will use for consumer and enterprise VPN IP telephony offerings, " commented Wyles.

Wyles is the latest in a series of strategic European appointments made by Clarent this year, which also include Denis Murphy, Area Vice President, United Kingdom and Paul Schillebeekx, Director of European Sales.

Denis Murphy came to Clarent this year after having spent 14 years with British Telecom, where he held positions as Sales Manager for the Voice Mail Division and Global and Multi-National Corporate Sales Manager. Prior to that, he spent 3 years as General Manager of Interactive Media Service's (IMS) Voice Products Division.

Paul Schillebeekx joined Clarent Corporation at the beginning of the year, having spent almost ten years in the telecommunications and IT industry. Schillebeekx previously carried out engineering and marketing roles with Belgacom Mobile, where he was responsible for the introduction of various voice and data products for both consumer and enterprise markets.

Heidi Bersin, Vice President of Marketing for Clarent Corporation commented on the reasons behind Clarent's increased European focus; "Europe is a very promising market with regards to IP Telephony. The deployment of Voice over IP technology is about to take off within many European countries. As the premier supplier of carrier-grade IP telephony technology, Clarent is well positioned to equip the major carriers and service providers to deliver attractive products to their customers and to secure a market position for themselves in the increasing competitive telecommunications arena."
