Tero:

Not 900,000 in 1997, but 900,000 in September of 1997. The GSM press release states that they've added 1.3 Million subs since the end of 1997, but the growth rate ("up 158% since last year") refers to a Sep-97 to Sep-98 comparison. (Otherwise, the growth rate would be 130%). I think Jeffs numbers of over 2 Million at year end remains accurate.

So the CDMA figure of 384% is figured the same way. Sep-97 to September-98

Is the number official? Sort of... let me explain.

The number is not published anywhere. However, there were only 5 commercially operating CDMA carriers in North America in Sep-97, Primeco, SprintPCS, Airtouch, 360, and GTE.

Primeco, SprintPCS and Airtouch released digital subscriber count as September 97 in their financials. 360 and GTE did not, but make up less than 5% of the total.

As of Sep-98, there were 12 commercially operating CDMA carriers in North America - SprintPCS, Primeco, BAM, Airtouch, Ameritech, GTE, US West, 360, Clearnet, Centenial P.R., Bell Mobility, and US Cellular. Of these, 8 reported their CDMA subscriber counts in their financials as of Sep-98. I left out of the 384% figure 4 carriers who were not commercial in Sep-97 and did not report subscriber base officially in Sep-98, even though they represent close to 300,000 subscribers.

Anyone can read the reports and add up the numbers. The rest is simple math, which most of us can handle!
