Development aid is not given because of guilty conscience, or because people "owe" something to the downtrodden. It is given because it is an ethical thing to do. (I know this is very abstract, and has also a moral dimension in it, but you can discuss this with your friends and hopefully they'll be able to explain.)

In fact the US is declaring a trade war if the Europeans want to support the poorest of the poor (by importing more expensive bananas of lesser quality). ALL the bananas have to come from our billionnaire lobbyist or we'll declare a trade war. Smart.
