I would call that a lie. What would you call it?

I would call it a divergence of opinion inside the firm...with the more seasoned opinion being made available to the paying customers.

If I go to a jewelry store and the salesman says $1000 is the best price. But then the owner comes by and says, "what the hell, I'll give it to you for $900." Was the salesman lying to me? Or was he doing the best he could with the information he had? That's how I view announced buy/sell recommendations...as the best the analyst can do with the info he/she has at the time. [The fact that a partner (owner) in the firm knows something else doesn't make the recommendation a lie.]
