Company Press Release
Patriot Scientific Offers Revolutionary Low-Cost Alternative to Remote Access Servers and Routers
NetShark Cardset Eliminates Dedicated Remote Access Servers That Cost 50 to 150 Percent More
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1998-- Patriot Scientific Corp. (OTCBB:PTSC - news), maker of high-performance ISDN Basic Rate and Primary Rate products for digital communications, today announced at Fall COMDEX the NetShark™ product line, a low-cost alternative to dedicated remote access servers and routers.

With the addition of NetShark's two standard PCI or ISA BUS cards, Windows NT servers can be configured as fully functional remote access servers, routers/bridges, Web servers and Internet POPs. NetShark's on-board microprocessor technology enables NT servers to maintain full server operability, using only a small fraction of the servers' CPU resources. This breakthrough solution is the most cost-effective on the market today, especially when compared to dedicated remote access servers that sell for 50 to 150 percent more.

Patriot is aiming the NetShark product line at the corporate remote access, thin client computing and ISP remote POP markets. Concurrent with the release of the NetShark line, Patriot has become a member of the Citrix® Business Alliance program. Citrix's MetaFrame™ software is a leading solution in the thin client computing market.

There are initially four offerings in the NetShark product line. The NetShark23 and NetShark46 (with 23 and 46 ports, respectively) for North American markets, and the NetShark30 and NetShark60 for Europe and other countries whose telephone systems are based on ETSI standards. Each NetShark offering requires two slots in a Windows NT server chassis. Pricing for the NetShark family begins at $6799 (MSRP) for the entry-level NetShark23.

A recent survey of leading dedicated 48-port remote access servers showed list prices ranging from $17,000 to $36,000. Adding NetShark46's dual cards to an NT server costs only $11,999 (MSRP) and instantly creates a 46-port NT-based remote access server.

''It simply makes sense for companies to take full advantage of the functionality built into their NT servers, especially when faced with enormous capital outlays for dedicated communications hardware,'' said Jim Lunney, president of Patriot Scientific. ''No product on the market can match the features and cost-effectiveness of NetShark. There is no need to attend 'Router School' to learn to install and manage a proprietary communications box. The total cost of ownership provided by the NetShark cardsets combined with a standard Windows NT server cannot be matched by proprietary box vendors.''

More than 2.5 million Windows NT servers will have been shipped by the end of 1998, creating an enormous market for Patriot's NetShark. The NetShark cardsets are an ''out-of-the-box solution'' to add WAN communications services to Windows NT servers, with NT's standard RAS/RRAS software modules providing the communications software portion of the solution. NetShark-equipped NT servers are compatible with analog, basic-rate ISDN and primary-rate ISDN data calls.

NetShark products are available in December from Patriot Scientific Corp. and its authorized distributors. Patriot is actively seeking channel partners to distribute the NetShark product line. The company is targeting Windows NT and Citrix MetaFrame VARs and distributors who focus on WAN communications technology.
