Extreme Networks Captures Number One Market Position for Worldwide
Layer 3 LAN Switching - BW, 06:05 a.m. Nov 16, 1998 Eastern

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1998--Continuing its
impressive growth, Extreme Networks has captured the number one market position
for overall Layer 3 LAN switch ports for the calendar quarter June -- September 1998.

According to a report issued this week by Dell'Oro Group,
the emerging networking and communications company has surpassed
Bay Networks, 3Com, Cabletron and Cisco to dominate this vital
market segment. Extreme was also the leader in Gigabit ports for
the quarter.

"Extreme's rapid rise to the leading spot reflects customer demand for cohesive Layer
3 enterprise solutions," said Gordon Stitt, Extreme's president and CEO. "Our leading
the market with almost 25 percent demonstrates how we've delivered on our promise
to provide networking solutions that reduce cost and complexity and enable our
customers to focus on running their businesses."

Extreme achieved the worldwide number one position for Layer 3 LAN switch ports
shipping only its stackable Summit LAN switches for a year. "We just began shipping
our new BlackDiamond chassis-based system at the end of the quarter, and based on
positive customer response, we anticipate our numbers to continue increasing and for
us to maintain market leadership," said Stitt.

The Q398 Shared Hub and LAN Switch report was released by the Dell'Oro Group
on Nov. 15, 1998. The report covers all manufacturers in the Layer 3 switch market,
including Cisco, 3Com, Bay Networks, Cabletron, Lucent and others.

Extreme's Industry Leading Solutions

Extreme owns and develops its own silicon, the Summit Chipset. Its custom ASICs
are tuned to deliver 100 percent of the multigigabit performance available on the
switch regardless of the network speed and without congestion or packet loss. This
allows for routing of IP traffic at wire speed on all switch ports -- offering true routing
that utilizes industry standards but at speeds never before seen.

The Extreme Networks family of enterprise LAN switching systems:

-- BlackDiamond(TM) 6800 -- chassis-based Gigabit Ethernet Layer-3
switch
-- Summit Virtual Chassis(TM) -- core switch
-- Summit1(TM) -- core switch
-- Summit2(TM) -- segment switch
-- Summit4(TM) -- integrated server switch
-- Summit24(TM) -- enterprise desktop switch
-- Summit48(TM) -- enterprise desktop switch
-- SummitGbx(TM) -- metropolitan and service provider networks

Extreme created and established the Enterprise Desktop Switch with its introduction of
the Summit48 in April 1998. Enterprise Desktop Switches provide high performance
at the edge of the network at the cost of desktop switch. The Summit24 is the second
switch in this popular new switch category.

All Extreme switches include the standards-based ExtremeWare(TM) software suite
that supports a multitude of enterprise-class routing and management features.
ExtremeWare's Policy-Based quality of Service allows for control of the network
based on the type of application and traffic. The suite includes, ExtremeWare
Vista(TM) -- for browser-based box-by-box management; and ExtremeWare
Enterprise Manager, for system wide management.

Extreme Networks is leading the Third Wave of LAN Switching and holds 23.5
percent of the Layer 3 LAN switching market (Dell'Oro Group). Extreme designs,
develops, manufactures and sells high-performance networking systems based on
Gigabit Ethernet.

To help companies migrate existing LANs to the extreme requirements of today's
intranets, Extreme offers its family of Summit LAN switches, BlackDiamond
chassis-based switch and ExtremeWare software to scale speed, bandwidth, network
size and quality of service from the desktop to the network core.

Extreme Networks is headquartered at 10460 Bandley Drive, Cupertino, Calif.,
95014, 408/342-0999, 888/257-3000, fax at 408/342-0990, and has offices in more
than 38 countries. Web site: www.extremenetworks.com.

Monday morning, can't log on to sh!t. Technology

Soon, we will be deluged with the likes of junk
