Compaq Announces "Triple Play" Broadband Internet Access Program Bringing Consumers Nationwide High-Speed Service

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1998--

Compaq Presario Internet PCs Equipped to Handle Cable, DSL and

Satellite High-Speed Services

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced a 'Triple play' broadband Internet access program, the most comprehensive partnership strategy to bring U.S. consumers the widest choice of ultra-fast Internet access.

Compaq's 'Triple Play' program spans three high-speed communications technologies -- cable, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), and satellite. The 'Triple Play' is Compaq's next step in delivering high-speed Internet access to consumers throughout North America. Through this program, Compaq has established relationships with Road Runner/MediaOne Express, @Home Network, Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, Hughes Network Systems/DirecPC(tm), GTE , SBC Communications, Inc., Sprint, and UUNET (a unit of MCIWorldcom). Compaq is aggressively working with these and other companies to enable consumers to easily sign-on and take advantage of high-speed Internet access nationwide(1), while providing a wide choice of available services.

"The 'Triple Play' program is the latest proof point to Compaq's vision of enabling the networked digital home through high-speed access to the Internet," said Rod Schrock, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Consumer Products Group, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Nationwide high-speed connectivity and the very best Internet computing experience are front and center to Compaq's consumer strategy. Only Compaq has partnered with the widest variety of high-speed Internet services available from leading cable, telecommunications and satellite companies."

The "Triple Play" Technologies

Compaq began its pursuit of mass-market high-speed Internet services as a key leader in the formation of the Universal ADSL Working Group(2) (UAWG) in January 1998. The efforts of the UAWG and its significant contributions to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) accelerated the development of the G.Lite (G.992.2) standard for DSL, which was determined last month by the ITU. The new G.Lite standard will make access to broadband Internet services as simple as plugging a phone into the wall.

In June of this year, Compaq further solidified its commitment to deliver broadband cable Internet services with an investment in Road Runner/MediaOne Express, a leading cable Internet service provider. As part of its strategy to promote industry standards, Compaq is working with Road Runner/MediaOne Express and several cable Multiple Service Operators (MSOs) to promote the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) as another way to reduce costs to the consumer. This investment reaffirms Compaq's position to offer the widest possible choice of high-speed Internet access.

The third element of the 'Triple Play' program includes Compaq's recent agreement with DirecPC to provide Internet services over satellite. DirecPC, the satellite Internet service offered by Hughes Network Systems, is currently deployed and available nationwide, enabling Presario PC users across the country to access the Internet at speeds up to 14 times faster than current analog modems.

Compaq has also pioneered bringing faster Internet speeds to the home by equipping Presario Internet PCs with the hardware necessary to make broadband installations as seamless as possible. Compaq's newly integrated 1.5Mb Max Digital modem(3) (G.Lite/V.90), introduced today as an industry first (see press release titled, "Compaq Introduces World's First Broadband-Ready Internet PCs"), as well as its onboard Ethernet port, are key components in enabling today's Compaq Presario PCs for high-speed Internet access. The cable- and DSL-ready onboard Ethernet port enables cable and DSL service providers to offer high-speed Internet access and pass along cost savings to consumers. In addition, the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, offered on all Compaq Presario Internet PCs, offers these same benefits to consumers accessing the Web through the DirecPC satellite service.

Compaq Internet Services Strategic Relationships

Compaq formed relationships with the companies involved in the 'Triple Play' program to drive widespread adoption, perform interoperability testing, and conduct joint marketing of the broadband Internet services available to home and business customers served by the member companies.

These relationships will drive end-to-end solutions for high-speed Internet services, while ensuring simplicity of setup, ease of use, and premier performance. Specifically, Compaq and members of the 'Triple Play' program will collaborate on a number of activities which include education, simplified service ordering, single point of contact, integrated registration processes, and ease of system setup and configuration.

Compaq has already begun helping consumers understand high-speed technology through its high-speed Web site at: compaq.com and will continue to build on the features of this site through efforts with the 'Triple Play' program participants. Compaq's Web site currently has educational articles on the various broadband technologies being highlighted today.
