T9 Text Input for the PalmPilot Organizer Awarded Five Star Rating From ZDNet
Tegic Communications' Software Receives the Highest Possible Rating
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16 1998--Tegic Communications today announced Ziff-Davis' ZDNet (NYSE:ZD - news) awarded T9(tm) text input for the 3COM® (NASDAQ:COMS - news) PalmPilot(tm) organizer five stars -- the highest possible rating.

T9 text input for the PalmPilot allows users to enter information quickly and easily on an intelligent touch-screen keypad.

Based in San Francisco, ZDNet develops and maintains the ZDNet website (http://www. zdnet.com), the Web's leading source for computing and Internet content. According to ZDNet's review of T9 text input, ''The accuracy of the program is truly impressive -- almost no mistakes are made. T9 is useful for those who haven't mastered the Graffiti language, but find the Pilot's built-in keyboard to be too small for rapid text entry. A nice feature of T9 is the fact that Graffiti is not disabled so you can use the T9 keyboard and Graffiti concurrently.''

''We are pleased to have been awarded such a high rating,'' explained R. Larry Atwell, senior product manager with Tegic Communications. ''Customers experience a real benefit with our larger keys. We've made text input a lot faster and easier and it's reflected in the extremely positive reviews and customer feedback we've received.''

T9 provides users with nine large keys. To type any word, a person simply taps the key containing the desired letter. T9 decodes the keystrokes to determine the correct word, automatically.

With T9, users also have full punctuation capabilities and access to a wide variety of symbols and international accented characters. T9 comes with more than 5,000 proper names, and the ability for users to add custom names or words to the T9 database.

Availability of T9 for the PalmPilot

T9 text input, which is now $29.95, is available directly from Tegic Communications' Web site www.t9palmpilot.com, as well as through several virtual stores, such as www.egghead.com, www.infoworld.com, www.softwarenow.net, www.yahoo.com and www.tryandbuy.com.

T9 text input may be run on the PalmPilot(tm) 5000, the PalmPilot(tm) Professional, the PalmPilot(tm) Personal, and the Palm III(tm) connected organizers, as well as Palm Computing-based devices from IBM and Symbol Technologies. It also will work with the PalmPilot(tm) 1000 as long as the device has been upgraded with Palm OS(tm) 2.0 or 3.0.

In addition to developing T9 for the PalmPilot organizer, Tegic Communications is licensing its technology to major communications and consumer electronics manufacturers worldwide. Wireless Phone manufacturers licensing T9 include: Fujitsu, Maxon, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung. Philips Mobile Computing is licensing T9 text input for its Windows CE device, called the Nino.
