My take would be why leave any business on the table. Remember, Tom does have a background in telesales. I would bet that Siebel will have a telesales department to do these deals.

The middle market is ok as long as the pricing structure for the entire product line is well thought out in the beginning. Im not a marketing person, just an observation... but thats what I saw with Sap a few years ago. I was working with a new PC clone vendor in Austin that at the time was a small company but was growing dramatically. Sap came in and pitched both products, the low end small business product - a brand new line (asap? I think - 500K) and also their high end which was in the millions. First of all, there was too much of a discrepancy between the 2 packages in price, and they didnt do a good job of delineating the products. Also there was no clear upgrade migration path between the 2 product lines, should you want to upgrade, but then again no case was made for anyone ever wanting to do that so it was clear that the low end product was cannibalizing the high end sales.
