DELL DEMONSTRATES SIZING TOOL AT COMDEX TO HELP CUSTOMERS DEPLOY MICROSOFT SQL SERVER 7.0 This just in: ------------------------------------------------------------------Sea-Land Plans Smooth Sailing Around the World with Dell and Microsoft at the Helm of their Database Infrastructure . LAS VEGAS, Nevada, Nov. 16, 1998 -- Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems company, this week is demonstrating to customers a software tool to help them plan and deploy solutions built on Microsoft's SQL Server™ 7.0 database which is being announced today at Comdex. Called Dell® PowerMatch™ for SQL, the new sizing tool is designed for customers planning to install and run Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 database applications on Dell PowerEdge® servers and PowerVault™ storage systems running Microsoft® Windows NT® or Windows 2000 Server. Sea-Land Service, Inc. plans to take advantage of the tool as it migrates SQL Server 7.0 onto 24 Dell PowerEdge servers early next year at its service center in Manila, Philippines, as well as eight other sites around the world. This combination of products helps Sea-Land manage a fleet of 105 container ships and approximately 200,000 containers serving 120 ports in 80 countries. The company's shipment management database is responsible for up-to-the-minute tracking of customer cargo as it's shipped throughout the world. The system records each shipment and tracks the order from port to port, allowing customers to track on-line the status of their shipment until it reaches its final destination. "The powerful combination of Dell PowerEdge 6350 servers, PowerVault storage systems, and the Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 database provides Sea-Land with a highly reliable and scalable solution for our Internet and line of business applications," said William C. Donovan, vice president, Information Technology, Sea-Land Service, Inc. Dell -- the No. 2 server vendor in the U.S. and No. 4 worldwide1 -- plans to introduce the tool to help customers evaluate their database requirements based on criteria the tool requests about their current business computing operations and needs. The new tool is being demonstrated to customers during Comdex and will be available from Dell in the first half of next year as a free download from Dell's website at www.dell.com/sql. Dell makes a similar PowerMatch tool for Microsoft Exchange that can be downloaded from Dell at www.dell.com/exchange. "Dell is taking a leadership position in its support of customers deploying Windows NT and SQL Server 7.0," said Rich Tong, vice president of Applications Marketing for Microsoft. "We are pleased that Dell is offering customers the products and tools to take advantage of SQL Server 7.0 scalability and reliability for a wide range of mission critical applications." "SQL Server 7.0 sets a high standard in the database industry," said Michael Lambert, senior vice president, Dell Enterprise Systems Group. "We want to help our customers realize its advantages as easily as possible. Dell's direct model, and customized server solutions available through its DellPlus™ Server Integration program, allow customers to deploy SQL Server 7.0-based solutions reliably, quickly and easily." Both the Standard and Enterprise Editions of SQL Server 7.0 are available within 30 days from Dell and can be preinstalled through a value-added global service for customers who require more complex or specialized server solutions. Through this service, called DellPlus Server Integration, customers can have single or multiple factory-configured systems shipped to one or many locations throughout the world. In the coming weeks, Dell plans to also offer customers electronic commerce packages that include SQL Server 7.0 as a core element.
