QUESTION: Why has Raymond James recently rated Onsale
ACCUMULATE while Everen Securities reiterates their STRONG BUY
for Onsale?
ANSWER: The best explanation for Everen Securities reiteration for a
STRONG BUY is given with the positive information provided in this FAQ.
Raymond James cited one reason for their downgrade. From the Raymond
James research report, "Onsale recently started selling selected
merchandise on its site at a fixed price in a format termed 'Quick-Buy'. This
is contrary to the previous mantra of the merits associated with the auction
format. It suggests that some customers are simply not interested in the
auction process." ... This is the ONLY reason for the downgrade. What
Raymond James failed to tell its investors is that the Quick Buy format
introduced in the last 15 days of the third quarter resulted in 10% of the
sales for the entire third quarter. Onsale recognized success and increased
the number of Quick-Buys during the fourth quarter. The Raymond James
report does not say anything about the VerticalNet/Onsale Industrial Site,
Onsale Japan, the Yahoo/Onsale person-person auction site, Onsale
/Cendent selling travel packages, etc., etc... The Raymond James report
concludes with "The trends we detect are not conclusive and do not
warrant a decision to sell the stock. In point of fact, even if ONSALE
conducts a significant portion of its sales through the 'Quick-Buy' format, it
is entirely possible that the format will prove to be even more profitable and
amenable to customer preferences."
