8.2 million transistors in this new part. Wonder what VooDoo3 chips will fetch on the open market after the first three months? $35 a part? $30 a part? I just don't understand how TDFX is supposed to get ahead developing very complex and powerful chips that the marketplace says are only worth about $30 a pop. Intel, AMD, National/Cyrix develop chips that have about eight million transistors in them (cpu's) and sell them for hundreds of dollars each. TDFX, nVIDEA, S3 develop chips that have six to eight million transistors each and then sell them for $30 each. Maybe these chips aren't quite as complex as a CPU, but they are in about the same ballpark as far as complexity goes. Oh well, at least I'll be able to buy a good upgrade for my Voodoo 2 soon.....

Regards.

The specs and OEM announcements look great. Now we need to take a step back and try to guess what it will mean in terms of $$'s for 3dfx next year.

Q1 will be the last bit of V2 sales and Banshee. We'll start to see the effect of the new products in Q2. I'd expect some more Banshee wins, but nVidia will have their .25 TNT and ATI isn't going away as well. nVidia isn't that financially strong, but ATI can compete on price, especially since they make the boards themselves.

All in all, I see 3Dfx maintaining their technology lead which will cause their market share to grow. They can move Banshee down into the sub-$1000 market and get volume there as well.

Michael

ps - I noted that they said more OEM announcements to come PLUS they made sure to point out that Voodoo3 will not be Windows only.
