Fed's secret source of advice:

Edward Boehne, president of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank, says he knew a few days later that the Fed had goofed[failing to cut rates enough in September]. When he checked into a hotel in a small town in Pennsylvania, the clerk looked at his title and said, "You didn't do enough."

"You don't usually get that from a hotel clerk," Mr. Boehne says.
